Project Overview and Obejctives

With a view to the mobility services of the future, air transport in particular is facing a profound change compared to its previous form. Modern and highly innovative technological developments are the basis for a variety of new aircraft and flight guidance concepts that will create highly individualised air transport services. In particular, rapid advances in the development of unmanned aerial systems and highly automated air taxis are leading to new solutions that will have to be integrated into the airspace shared with conventional aviation in the future. U-Spaces create the conditions for a safe coexistence of new and conventional manned aviation.

In U-Spaces, each airspace participant is obliged to transmit its position and speed via an unmanned traffic management system (UTM). U-Spaces are therefore used to detect flying objects that do not have conventional transponder technologies. Unmanned aircraft in U-Spaces must also use certain U-Space services that further enhance the safety of the airspace. In addition to identification, these include authorisation for flight operations, information on airspace restrictions and information on other airborne systems operating in the airspace.

The main objective of the U-SpaceR3 research project is to demonstrate the safe interaction of manned and unmanned aviation in U-space. Particular focus is on robust 5G connectivity for highly networked aviation. Real-world data obtained from the interactions of all heterogeneous air traffic participants in the U-Space laboratory will be used for the dimensioning and design of future U-Space services and made available in a general form.

Tasks of the FSD

Within the research project, the FSD takes the role of consortium leader. With the help of the other project partners, the FSD develops a transport concept for a U-Space. Particular attention will be drawn to integrating the legal requirements to ensure adequate air risk into an airspace integration concept. This transport concept will then be applied in a real laboratory using currently available airspace elements. In the real laboratory, the FSD will investigate the interactions of conventional manned aviation with fully automated aviation in extensive test series and demonstrate safe airspace integration through U-Space Services.
