Flight Systems and controlling

In order to successfully cope with every task in the various projects of the FSD, different flight systems are used for different tasks. Together with partners, the FSD has specialized in so-called tilt-wing aircraft, which are particularly characterized by their flexible use. The tilt-wing configuration enables vertical take-off and landing as well as hovering flights, which can be tactically important during operations.

Flight guidance / Integration into Airspace

Flight guidance is one of the central research areas in the field of automation of flight systems. One of the central tasks here is the development of algorithms for path planning and flight control for the integration of reliable autonomous flight systems. They have to plan their paths in advance, react to external influences and be able to avoid other air traffic participants in order to be able to guarantee a safe and reliable use of these flight systems.

Search and Rescue and Medical Services

In research in the field of "Search and Rescue and Medical Services", the Institute for Flight System Dynamics works on various projects on the integration of flight systems into the everyday work of emergency services. The advantages of the flight systems at the institute can be seen especially in projects such as Vision and Falke. The focus here is on the fact that important information can be transmitted to the emergency services before and during an operation. This includes the search for missing people in the case of Vision or in the case of Falke the assessment of accident sites before the emergency services arrive. In addition, the flight systems are also used in projects such as FlutNetz for the transport of medical goods in order to be able to support medical care in disaster areas.

Silent Air Taxis

In the field of research "silent air taxis", the FSD deals with flight dynamics, analyzing and the developing of flight control and flight guidance systems for innovative aircraft configurations, such as a box-wing aircraft for regional air traffic. As part of the E-Sat Start project, for example, the institute is responsible for an innovative fly-by-wire-based flight control system. In addition, research is being carried out in close cooperation with project partners from the aviation industry on suitable modularity concepts for flight control, including the specification and development of actuators.

Airborne Wind Energy

As part of the EnerGlider project, the FSD is researching a special form of wind energy - so-called airborne wind energy. The aim of the project is to develop a new, innovative high-altitude wind energy plant. In contrast to conventional wind turbine, such wind energy plants are intended to use the steady and more energetic wind at great heights. A glider tied to the ground with a rope harvests the wind while it flies in the wind like a kite. The Institute for Flight System Dynamics is developing a corresponding control and regulation concept for these flight systems in order to enable efficient, autonomous and safe operation of the system.
