European UAV-assisted transport solutions for medical goods
Overview and Objectives
The use of unmanned aerial systems for safe and rapid transportation of medical goods between pharmaceutical wholesalers, laboratories and hospitals offers enormous potential for significantly improving medical care between cities and rural regions. The digitization-driven smart networking of these medical logistic processes is being advanced in the Rhineland region and can save human lives.
Within the project, a safe transport of medical goods by highly automated unmanned aerial vehicles is to be realized. The integration of the UAS into airspace requires the combination of different data sources as well as a dedicated 5G-networked data management. A safe data handling in the course of automated integration of the transports into the infrastructure of hospitals and laboratories represents another innovative research aspect.
For a successful implementation of the project, a system architecture for medical transports will be defined based on a requirements analysis. Safe flight operations through integration into the airspace as well as the necessary research and development of sufficient connectivity including data management are essential activities. Furthermore, the extensive, automated integration into the medical operation as well as a flight execution on selected routes in the Rhineland region will take place.
Role of the FSD
Within the research project, the FSD assumes the role of consortium leader. Corresponding with its expertise, the focus is on safe flight operations. In addition to the integration into U-Space services, the FSD explores the possibilities of an onboard conflict detection and avoidance and extends the existing flight path planning for the automated consideration of geo-zones. Furthermore, the FSD is involved in the development of the system architecture and the interface between the flight system and the ground-based platform, as well as in the development of a control room for the central control and monitoring of the flight systems.
